Consider The Sparta Store

The Sparta Store carries local and regional products. If you're an artist, craftsperson or manufacturer and you produce items related to the town of Sparta, NC, Alleghany or surrounding counties, the Blue Ridge Parkway or the New River, consider selling at our store, or online at spartastore.com. Also, if you are from Sparta, Alleghany County, or nearby in the Blue Ridge Mountains and are interested, give us a call.

We'd like to carry items like music CDs, DVDs, books, games, toys, woodwork, art glass, pottery, or other functional home products. Our customers are also interested in history, of the town, specifically and the mountain region in general. The Sparta Store is not interested in perishable food or drink, weapons, alcohol or spirits.

If you feel like you'd fit in, fill out our consignment form and return it with information about your products. Our consignment rate is 30% of the retail price and we reconcile at the end of each month.

Also, if you're new at this, remember to price your items so that you make money. It’s a basic principle, but an important one- don’t price your products too low. Set your prices so you are able to cover your costs and make a profit.

If you're established and just need an online presence, The Sparta Store has great visibility and traffic is increasing all the time. Our idea of carrying only area items isn't a new one, but it's a good model in an area so rich in heritage and culture.

Demographic

Our customers include natives, folks who've moved away, newcomers and tourists. Native Alleghanians are generally proud of their heritage and there are many who have moved away looking for jobs that love home and return after retirement. Newcomers to the area range from retirees who come for the climate and tax rates to summer-home owners.

Tourists are only recently looking at our area as a destination, but the unspoiled landscapes and parks are drawing them in. There are 5 State Parks, 3 National Recreational Areas, the New River, a National Park and a National Forest within a 25 mile radius of Sparta.

There are 5 major metro areas within a two hour drive surrounding Alleghany- Tri-Cities in Tennessee; Roanoke, Virginia; and the Triad, Hickory and Charlotte in NC. With the economy as it is, our town is a perfect weekend getaway or day-trip for all of them.
